The pose had worked in practice.

Onstage, my middle back tightened. My traps began to cramp. They had already been inflamed, and I could not open my back far enough to present the shape I had rehearsed.

The failure was small enough that most people would have missed it.

I did not.

Bodybuilding is built from details that become visible only after hundreds of repetitions. A shoulder placed a fraction too high. A waist not held tightly enough. A back that opens too late. Two minutes can reveal months of preparation.

Those two minutes revealed something else.

I believed the failed pose cost me first place in Open. I won Masters and placed third in Open. Both facts remained true at once: I had achieved something meaningful, and I could see the result I might have reached.

That was the familiar question.

What could I have done better?

The unfamiliar question arrived beside it.

What was I asking all this strength to prove?

The question did not make the competition a mistake. It did not turn discipline into disease. It did not transform a physical cramp into a coded message.

My traps cramped because they were under physical demand.

The interruption simply removed my ability to perform the answer I had prepared.

I could not open my back.

For a moment, I could not hide behind the finished shape either.

Strength had given me structure, patience, and a body capable of more than I once expected at 45. But the same evidence could not tell me whether every additional demand remained useful.

Force can be measured.

Purpose cannot.

Force can be measured. Purpose cannot.

The stage showed what I had built. The failed pose made me ask what the building was now serving.

That question stayed longer than the cramp.

This field note is the companion to Tuesday's essay, What I Got Wrong About Strength.

Field Notes are short scenes from my own life in medicine and training. Subscribing is free, and it's how the next one finds you.

If someone you love is still proving they can carry more, send this to them.

What are you still asking your strength to prove? Tell me in the comments. I read them.
